ચિત્રકેતુ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
ચિત્રકેતુ શૂરસેન દેશનો રાજા હતો. તેને એક કરોડ સ્ત્રીઓ હતી. પણ સંતાન ન હતું. તેથી અંગિરા ઋષિએ ત્વષ્ટા દેવનું પૂજન કરી ચરુ રાંધ્યો અને તે અન્ન રાજાની મુખ્ય રાણી કૃતદ્યુતિને ખવરાવવાનું કહ્યું. પછી રાજાને ત્યાં પુત્રનો જન્મ થયો. રાજા રાણીને તેમ જ પ્રજાને મોટો આનંદ થયો. પણ બીજી રાણીઓને ઈર્ષ્યા થવાથી તેણે કુંવરને ગુપ્તપણે ઝેર દીધું. તેથી પુત્ર મરણ પામ્યો. રાજા-રાણીને અત્યંત શોક થયો. શોકને લીધે તેમને અત્યંત દુઃખિત થયેલા જાણી અંગિરા મુનિ નારદજી સાથે ત્યાં આવ્યા. તે બંને મહાત્માએ રાજાને ઉપદેશ આપ્યો. તેથી રાજા રાજ્યસમૃદ્ધિનો ત્યાગ કરી યમુના નદીને કાંઠે તપ કરવા લાગ્યો. ઘણા તપના પ્રભાવથી તેને અમોઘ સિદ્ધિ પ્રાપ્ત થઈ. તે યોગથી બીજા જન્મમાં તે વિદ્યાધરનું આધિપત્ય પામ્યો.
એક વખત ચિત્રકેતુ આકાશ માર્ગે વિહાર કરતા હતા. તેમણે જોયું કે શિવજી સિદ્ધો-ચારણોની વચ્ચે મોટા મુનિઓની સભામાં પાર્વતીને ખોળામાં રાખીને એક હાથે આલિંગન કરતાં બેઠા છે. તેમને શિવજીનો અવગુણ આવ્યો કે: “અહો! શું આ જ સમસ્ત જગતના ધર્માચાર્ય અને ગુરુદેવ છે? આ જ ભલા ચોંટીને બેઠા છે. જટાધારી ઘણા મોટા તપસ્વી અને બ્રહ્મવાદીઓના સભાપતિ હોવા છતાં પણ આ સાધારણ મનુષ્યની જેમ નિર્લજ્જપણે પત્નીને ખોળામાં લઈને બેઠા છે! સાધારણ મનુષ્યો પણ ઘણું કરીને એકાંતમાં પત્નીઓ સાથે ઊઠે - બેસે છે, જ્યારે આ આટલા મોટા વ્રતધારી હોવા છતાંય ભરી સભામાં પત્નીને લઈને બેઠા છે!” આથી તેમણે નીચે ઊતરીને ઉપહાસ કરીને શિવજીને ના કહેવાના શબ્દો કહ્યા. આથી તેનો ઘમંડ જોઈને પાર્વતીએ શાપ આપ્યો કે, “તું પાપમય અસુર યોનિમાં જા.” તેથી ચિત્રકેતુ વૃત્રાસુર તરીકે જન્મ્યા. શિવજીનો અપરાધ થવાથી અસુર થવું પડ્યું. પરંતુ પૂર્વકર્મના સંસ્કારથી તેને પૂર્વજન્મનું સ્મરણ રહ્યું હતું. જ્ઞાને કરીને તેની બુદ્ધિ ઈશ્વરમાં જ રહેતી. તેથી કેટલાક કાળ પૃથ્વી ઉપર રહી અંતે તે પરમ ગતિને પામ્યો હતો.

Chitraketu was the king of Shursen. He had 10 million queens but no children. Angirā Rishi worshiped Tvashtā Dev and prepared some cooked rice. He told Chitraketu to give it to his dearest wife to eat. Chitraketu had Krutdyuti eat the rice and she bore a son. The king and the kingdom were overjoyed. The other queens became jealous and fed the newly born prince poison secretly. The death of their son brought the king and queen immense sorrow. Angirā, bringing Nāradji along, came to visit them. They preached to them about the misery of worldly life. Chitraketu renounced his kingdom and its wealth to perform penance at the banks of Yamunā River. From the merits of his penance, he achieved great powers, and he became the superior of all the vidyādhars in his next life.
One day, he was flying in space in a vimān. He noticed that Shivji was sitting in an assembly of munis while embracing Pārvatiji who was in his lap. He thought to himself: “This is the one who preaches dharma to the world and who is a guru? He himself is unashamedly embracing a woman in an assembly of ascetics. Even ordinary men associate with their wife in privacy. Yet, he has no shame of his behavior in public.” Chitraketu descended from his vimān and derided Shivji. Pārvati was provoked and cursed him that he would be born as a demon. He was born as Vrutrāsur; however, he retained his gnān from his previous birth. Therefore, he remained focused on God. He lived for many years on the earth and achieved a higher state after his death.
