પદ - ૧૭

કઠણ વચન કહું છું રે, કડવાં કાંકચ્ય¹ રૂપ;

દરદીને ગોળી દઉં છું રે, સુખ થાવા અનૂપ... ૧

ખરે મને જે જન ખાવશે રે, આવું જે ઔષદ;

જીરણ² રોગ તેનો જાવશે રે, સુખી થાશે સદ... ૨

પણ બીક રહે છે બોલતાં રે, સાચી દેતાં શિખ;

ખરાં છિદ્ર કેનાં ખોલતાં રે, વવાઈ જાશે વિખ³... ૩

દેહ માનીને દલમાં રે, સુણતાં જાશે સુખ;

પ્રજળશે⁴ તેહ પળમાં રે, દાઝ્યે થાશે દુઃખ... ૪

માટે કહું ન કહું કોઈને રે, એમ આવે વિચાર;

નિષ્કુળાનંદ વિચારી જોઈને રે, પછી કરું ઉચ્ચાર... ૫

પદ - ૧૮

સુણો સાધુ શુકજી સરખા રે, નારદ જેવા નેક;

નથી ઉપમાં માનો મૂરખા રે, ઉર કરો વિવેક... ૧

જડભરત જેવા જાણીએ રે, સનકાદિક સમાન;

કદરજ જેવા વખાણીએ રે, ખરા ક્ષમાવાન... ૨

એવી સાધુતાને આશરી રે, જ્યારે લીધો જોગ;

ત્યારે પ્રીત સહુશું પરહરી રે, ભૂલવા ભવ ભોગ... ૩

એની રીત્યે રીત્ય આપણી રે, બીજી રીત્યે બાધ;

પરહરો પરી⁵ પાપણી રે, વળગી એ વરાધ⁶... ૪

ફોગટ⁷ પડતાં બીજા ફંદમા⁸ રે, આવે દુઃખ અત્યંત;

નિષ્કુળાનંદ આનંદમાં રે, સદા રહોને સંત... ૫

પદ - ૧૯

શુકજીએ નથી સંઘર્યું રે, ધાતુ વળી ધન;

નાણું નારદે ભેળું ન કર્યું રે, કહે છે કોયે દન... ૧

જડભરતે ન જોડાવિયું રે, ગાડું ગાડી વેલ;

કદરજનું વ્યાસે કા’વિયું રે, ખરી ક્ષમાનો ખેલ... ૨

સનકાદિકે સુખ કારણે રે, ઘોડું ન રાખ્યું ઘેર;

આ તો બાંધ્યાં બીજાને બારણે⁹ રે, કરવા કાળો કે’ર¹⁰... ૩

મેલી ઊભી અસલ રીતને રે, નકલ લીધી નેક;

તે તો ચોંટી ગઈ ચિત્તને રે, છોડી ન છૂટે છેક... ૪

કોઈ કહે એની કોરનું રે, તે શું બંધાયે વેર;

કહે નિષ્કુળાનંદ નોરનું¹¹ રે, મું પર રાખજો મે’ર... ૫

પદ - ૨૦

જરૂર જાવું છે જાણજો રે, પ્રભુજીની પાસ;

એવી દેશીયે¹² મ આણજો રે, વણ કર્યે તપાસ... ૧

જાણો જગ મોટાઈ જૂઠ છે રે, તેની તજો તાણ;

એને ઇચ્છે તે હૈયાફૂટ¹³ છે રે, ન ઇચ્છે સુજાણ... ૨

મેલો લાભ આ લોક સુખનો રે, પ્રીત કરો પરલોક;

એ તો મતો છે મૂરખનો રે, ખોટો હરખ શોક... ૩

રૂડા સંતની રીતડી રે, જાણો જુદી જન;

જેને પ્રભુ સાથે પ્રીતડી રે, તે વિચારો મન... ૪

માથે કલંક ને મરશું રે, એ તો છે અકાજ;

તે તો નિષ્કુળાનંદ નરસું રે, જોઈ રીઝે નહિ રાજ... ૫

પદ - ૨૧

શોધી આવ્યો તું સતસંગમાં રે, ભજવાને ભગવાન;

આવ્યો તૈંયેં તારા અંગમાં રે, નો’તા મોટપ માન... ૧

સહુ સંતને શીશ નામતો રે, થઈને દાસાનુદાસ;

ગુણ ગોવિંદજીના ગાવતો રે, જગથી થઈ ઉદાસ... ૨

એહ ગયું તારી ગાંઠનું¹⁴ રે, બીજું પેઠું પાપ;

લઈ લીધું લક્ષણ લાંઠનું¹⁵ રે, અવળું કર્યું આપ... ૩

બની વાત ગઈ બગડી રે, કવથાણું¹⁶ છે કામ;

દિલે સળગે છે સગડી રે, સહુનો થાવા શ્યામ¹⁷... ૪

નાને ગુણે મોટપ ન મળે રે, વિચારી જોને વાત;

કહે નિષ્કુળાનંદ કાં બળે રે, ઠાલો દી’ ને રાત... ૫

પદ - ૨૨

મોટા થાવાનું મનમાં રે, દલમાં ઘણો ડોડ;¹⁸

તેવા ગુણ નથી તનમાં રે, કાં કરે તું કોડ¹⁹... ૧

તું તપાસી જોને તુજને રે, ઊતરી અંતર માંય;

પછી ઇચ્છજે થાવા પૂજ્યને રે, તેનું નથી કાંય... ૨

કામ ક્રોધ વળી લોભ છે રે, લિયે છે તારી લાજ;

તેણે કરી અંતરે ક્ષોભ છે રે, જો વિચારી આજ... ૩

ભૂંડા ઘાટ ઊઠે છે ભીતરે રે, જે ન કહેવાય બા’ર;

એહ વાતનો તારે અંતરે રે, નથી નર વિચાર... ૪

નથી ખોળતો ખોટ્ય²⁰ માંયની રે, દે છે બીજાને દોષ;

કહે નિષ્કુળાનંદ ન્યાયની રે, અમથો શો અપસોષ... ૫

પદ - ૨૩

એક ભૂંસાડીને એકડો રે, વાળ્યાં મીંડા વીશ;

જોતાં સરવાળો ન જડ્યો રે, ત્યારે કરે છે રીશ... ૧

ધન વિના કરે છે ધાંખના²¹ રે, કાંઈક મળવા કાજ;

પામીશ નહિ પડીકાં રાખનાં રે, ઠાલી ખોઈશ લાજ... ૨

દીવો દિનકર²² આગળે રે, કરવા જાયે કોય;

શોભા શું લખાય કાગળે રે, ઊલટી હાંસી હોય... ૩

મોટા પંડિત આગે મૂરખો રે, કરે કોય ઉચ્ચાર;

સહુ જાણે પશુ સરખો રે, ભૂલ્યે ન પડે ભાર... ૪

માંડી મોર કળા સોહામણી રે, પછી દેખાડે પૂંઠ;

નિષ્કુળાનંદ લાગે લજામણી રે, જરાય નથી જૂઠ... ૫

પદ - ૨૪

વાત હેતની હૈયે ધારજો રે, સમજીને સુજાણ;

કામ પડે એ વિચારજો રે, તો થાશે કલ્યાણ... ૧

પ્રભુજીનાં પદ પામવા રે, આ છે સુંદર સાર;

વડાં વિઘનને વામવા રે, પામવા બેડો પાર... ૨

કહ્યું લગાડીને કડવું રે, લીમથી²³ ઘણું લાખ;

એમ કહીને નો’તું લડવું રે, સહુ પૂરશે સાખ²⁴... ૩

કોઈ વીંધે આવી કાનને રે, કરીને કળ છળ;

પણ સમજો તેના તાનને રે, પે’રાવશે કુંડળ... ૪

રૂડું આપણી જે રીતનું રે, શોધી કહ્યું સાર;

કહ્યું નિષ્કુળાનંદે હિતનું રે, સારું સુખ દેનાર... ૫

Pad - 17

In the next set of 8 verses, Nishkulanand Swami gives courage to those walking on the path of a sadhu. He gives examples of those who tread the path in the past as inspiration. Nishkulanand Swami continues speaking in the first person.

Kathaṇ vachan kahu chhu re, kaḍvā kānkachya rūp;

 Dardīne golī dau chhu re, sukh thāvā anūp... 1

(1) I am going to say some harsh words that are like bitter medicine. I am giving the diseased a pill (in the form of words) that will bring them immense happiness.

Khare mane je jan khāvshe re, āvu je aushad;

 Jīraṇ rog teno jāvshe re, sukhī thāshe sad... 2

(2) One who takes this medicine with a positive attitude will be freed from their chronic disease and will become happy immediately.

Paṇ bīk rahe chhe boltā re, sāchī deṭā shīkh;

 Kharā chhidra kenā kholtā re, vavāī jāshe vikh... 3

(3) However, I fear speaking and giving true advice. I fear exposing the true nature (faults) of fraudsters as it may plant enmity.

Deh mānīne dalmā re, suṇtā jāshe sukh;

 Prajaḷshe teh paḷmā re, dājhye thāshe dukh... 4

(4) One who identifies himself as the body will hear this and will not be happy. On the contrary, a flame will ignite and he will burn with grief.

Māṭe kahu na kahu koīne re, em āve vichār;

 Nishkuḷānand vichārī joīne re, pachhī karu uchchār... 5

(5) Therefore, shall I speak or not speak; that is the thought that occurs to me. Nishkulanand thinks much about this before speaking.

Pad - 18

Suṇo sādhu Shukjī sarkhā re, Nārad jevā nek;

 Nathī upma māno mūrkhā re, ur karo vivek... 1

(1) Listen, sadhus as great as Shukji and as pious as Narajdi are one of a kind. Fools, believe me that they cannot be compared to others (frauds); think about this with discretion.

Jaḍbharat jevā jāṇīe re, Sanakādik samān;

 Kadraj jevā vakhāṇīe re, kharā kshmāvān... 2

(2) True sadhus are like Jadbharat and Sanakadik; we praise Kadraj, who was very forgiving...

Evī sādhutāne āshrī re, jyāre līdho jog;

 Tyāre prīt sahushu parharī re, bhulvā bhav bhog... 3

(3) When we have chosen the path of the sadhus like these, then we have broken all affection from everyone and the indulgences of the world.

Enī rītye rītya āpṇī re bījī rītye bādh;

 Parharo parī pāpṇī re, vaḷgī e varādh... 4

(4) Our way is their way; any other way is binding (we will become bound to this world). Renounce and stay away from sinful desires, which cling to you like a disease.

Fogaṭ paḍtā bījā fandmā re, āve dukh atyant;

 Nishkuḷānand ānandmā re, sadā rahone sant... 5

(5) By getting trapped in the vain happiness of the world, one invites great suffering. Nishkulanand Swami says, “Oh sadhus! Remain forever joyful.”

Pad - 19

Shukjie nathī sangharyu re, dhātu vaḷī dhan;

 Nāṇu Nāraḍe bheḷu na karyu re, kahe chhe koye dan... 1

(1) Shukji never hoarded money or gold. Naradji never gathered money.

Jaḍbharte na joḍāviyu re, gāḍu gāḍī vel;

 Kadrajnu Vyāse kā’viyu re, kharī kshamāno khel... 2

(2) Jadbharat never used a bullock cart, wagon, or chariot. Vyas wrote about Kadraj’s true forgiveness.

Sanakādike sukh kārṇe re, ghoḍu na rākhyu gher;

 Ā to bāndhyā bījāne bārṇe re, karvā kāḷo ker... 3

(3) Sanakadik, for their happiness, did not keep horses in their house. Whereas, here (in these sadhus), a horse is tied to another’s house to create trouble.

Melī ūbhī asal rītne re, nakal līdhī nek;

 Te to chontī gaī chittne re, chhoḍī na chhuṭe chhek... 4

(4) By abandoning the true ways (of the sadhus of the past), a false sadhu takes the fake path as righteous. This path of unrighteousness is lodged in their mind and they cannot abandon it.

Koī kahe enī kornu re, te shu bandhāye ver;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand nornu re, mu par rākhjo me’r... 5

(5) If anyone points this out, they will develop enmity toward them. Nishkulanand Swami says, “Please have mercy upon me.”

Pad - 20

Jarūr jāvu chhe jāṇjo re, Prabhujīnī pās;

 Evī deshīye ma āṇjo re, vaṇ karye tapās... 1

(1) Know that we certainly want to go near God. However, do not falsely believe you are worthy to go near God without examining yourself.

Jāṇo jag moṭāī jūṭh chhe re, tenī tajo tāṇ;

 Ene īchchhe te haiyāfūṭ chhe re, na īchchhe sujāṇ... 2

(2) Know that worldly fame is false; so do not crave for it. Whoever craves for it are fools. The wise do not desire it.

Melo lābh ā lok sukhno re, prīt karo parlok;

 E to mato chhe mūrakhno re, khoṭo harakh shok... 3

(3) Abandon the happiness of this world and wish for the happiness of God’s abode. Attaining happiness of this world is the belief of fools; happiness and misery of this world is false.

Rūḍā santnī rītḍī re, jāṇo judī jan;

 Jene Prabhu sāth prītdī re, te vichāro man... 4

(4) The way of the great Sant is different (from the ways of common man). He has affection for God. One should think about this.

Mathe kalank ne marshu re, eto chhe akāj;

 Te to Nishkuḷānand narsu re, joī rījhe nahi rāj... 5

(5) It is not proper to die with vices on your head (i.e. to your name). Nishkulanand Swami says God will not be pleased seeing that.

Pad - 21

Shodhī āvyo tu satsangmā re, bhajvāne Bhagwān;

 Āvyo taiye tārā angmā re, no’tā moṭap mān... 1

(1) You found yourself in Satsang to worship God. When you came into Satsang, you had no desires for fame and honor.

Sahu santne shīsh nāmto re, thaīne dāsānudās;

 Guṇ Govindjīnā gāvto re, jagthī thaī udās... 2

(2) You humbly bowed to all the sadhus and behaved as a servant of servants. You sang the praises of God and were apathetic to the world (worldly happiness or greatness).

Eh gayu tārī gānṭhnu re, bīju peṭhu pāp;

 Laī līdhu lakshaṇ lānṭhnu re, avḷu karyu āp... 3

(3) Now, you have lost all your spiritual wealth and sins now harbor your heart. Now, you now imbibe the characteristic of the wicked and (knowingly) did wrong.

Banī vāt gaī bagḍī re, kavthāṇu chhe kām;

 Dile saḷge chhe sagḍī re, sahuno thāvā Shyām... 4

(4) What was once good is now spoiled; you have ruined your task (of liberation). A raging fire burns in your heart like a stove to become everyone’s God (i.e. become the greatest among all).

Nāne guṇe moṭap na maḷe re, vichārī jone vāt;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand kā baḷe re, ṭhālo di’ ne rāt... 5

(5) However, you cannot become great with inferior virtues. Think on that. Nishkulanand Swami asks, “Why do you burn with emptiness day and night (spend your days in emptiness)?”

Pad - 22

Moṭā thāvānu manmā re, dalmā ghaṇo ḍoḍ;

 Tevā guṇ nathī tanmā re, kā kare tu koḍ... 1

(1) In your heart, you have great expectation to become great. However, you do not possess the virtues of greatness, so why do you long for greatness?

Tu tapāsī jone tujne re, ūtarī antarmāy;

 Pachhī īchchheje thāvā pūjyane re, tenu nathī kāy... 2

(2) Inspect yourself by going deep in your heart. Realizing you have nothing, how can you desire to be worshiped?

Kām krodh vaḷī lobh chhe re, liye chhe tārī lāj;

 Tene karī antare kshobh chhe re, jo vichārī āj... 3

(3) Lust, anger, and greed are discrediting your reputation. These vicious natures are a disturbance in your heart; think about that and you will see.

Bhunḍā ghāṭ ūṭhe chhe bhītare re, je na kahevāy bā’r;

 Eh vātno tāre antare re, nathī nar vichār... 4

(4) Inappropriate thoughts arise in your mind, which cannot be said out loud. You do not even think about this.

Nathī khoḷto khoṭya māynīre, de chhe bījāne dosh;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand nyāynī re, amtho sho apsosh... 5

(5) You do not look for your own faults, yet you find faults in others. Nishkulanand Swami says where is the justice? You have no sorrow of this (i.e. in seeing others as flawed and oneself as perfect).

Pad - 23

Ek bhusāḍīne ekḍo re, vāḷyā mīnḍā vīs;

 Jotā sarvālo na jaḍyo re, tyāre kare chhe rīs... 1

(1) You erased the digit ‘1’ and wrote twenty zeroes. When this does not add up, you become mad.

Dhan vinā kare chhe dhānkhnā re, kāīk maḷvā kāj;

 Pāmīsh nahi paḍīkā rākhnā re, ṭhālī khoīsh lāj... 2

(2) Without any money, you still desire to acquire great things. You will only acquire packets of ashes and lose your dignity.

Dīvo dinkar āgḷe re, karvā jāye koy;

 Shobhā shu lakhāy kāgḷe re, ūlṭī hāsī hoy... 3

(3) One who lights a flame while the sun is out will be laughed at. Of what comparison is the brightness of the flame to the sun?

Moṭā panḍit āge mūrakho re, kare koy uchchār;

 Sahu jāṇe pashu sarkho re, bhulye na paḍe bhār... 4

(4) A foolish (ignorant) person who argues with a great pundit will be considered like an animal by others. The words of the fool have no effect.

Mānḍī mor kaḷā sohāmaṇī re, pachhī dekhāḍe pūṭh;^†

 Nishkuḷānand lāge lajāmaṇī re, jarāy nathī jūṭh... 5

(5) A peacock spreads its feathers and looks elegant; but doing so exposes its ugly back. Nishkulanand Swami says there is no untruth that this is disgraceful.

^†Aksharbrahma Gunatitanand Swami has mentioned this in his Swamini Vato 3/69. When a peacock spreads its feathers, it looks beautiful from the front but this display exposes its ugly back.

Pad - 24

Vāt hetnī haiye dhārjo re, samjīne sujāṇ;

 Kām paḍe e vichārjo re; to thāshe kalyāṇ... 1

(1) Oh virtuous ones! Bear these words of affection in your heart with understanding. When the need arises, think about this. Then, one will be liberated.

Prabhujīnā pad pāmvā re, ā chhe sundar sār;

 Vaḍā vighan ne vāmvā re, pāmvā beḍo pār... 2

(2) This is the essence to reach God. This is also to avoid great obstacles and to make it all the way to God.

Kahyu lagāḍīne kaḍvu re, līmthī ghaṇu lākh;

 Em kahīne no’tu laḍvu re, sahu pūrshe sākh... 3

(3) I have said this, despite it being a hundred thousand times bitter than the juice of the neem (limdo) leaves. By saying this, I did not want to scold you, as everyone will testify (to my good intentions).

Koī vīndhe āvī kānne re, karīne kaḷ chhaḷ;

 Paṇ samjo tenā tān ne re, pe’rāvshe kunḍaḷ... 4

(4) Someone pierces our ears by tricks or deception; but understand their motive, it is only so we can wear earrings.

Rūḍu āpṇī je rītnu re, shodhī kahyu sār;

 Kahyu Nishkuḷānande hitnu re, sāru sukh denār... 5

(5) Our way is great, and I spoke the essence having found it (from the scriptures). Nishkulanand Swami says for your own benefit, this will give you happiness.
