Chosath Padi

Pad 1 - 8

Pad - 1

In these first few verses, Nishkulanand Swami explains the characteristics of a genuine Sant.

Ek vāt anūp amol, karu chhu kahevātaṇu;

 Paṇ manbhāī kahe chhe ma bolya, ghoḷyu na kahevu ghaṇu. 1

(1) I wish to tell you something that is incomparable and invaluable; but my mind keeps saying, “Don’t speak! Let it go, don’t say anymore.”

Paṇ vaṇkahye jo vigat, paḍe kem parne;

 Sant asantamā ek mat, nische rahe narne. 2

(2) However, without saying anything, how will others know the difference between a genuine Sant and an asant (fraud)? Certainly, others will consider a Sant and asant as the same.

Māṭe kahyā vinā na kaḷāy, sahu te suṇī lahīe;

 Moṭā santno kahyo mahimāy, te sant kone kahīe. 3

(3) Therefore, without telling you, you will not be able to recognize the difference; so listen carefully to the greatness of a Motā Sant, whose greatness is sung (in the scriptures).

Ke’ chhe sant sevye sare kāj, em chhe āgammā;

 Suṇī Nishkuḷānand te āj, sahu chhe udyammā. 4

(4) The shāstras (āgam) mention that by serving the great Sant, one accomplishes all their tasks (attains moksha). After listening to that glory of the Sant, Nishkulanand Swami says all are putting in effort to understand his glory.

Pad - 2

Evā sant taṇī oḷkhāṇ, kahu sahu sāmbhaḷo;

 Pachhī sopī tene man prāṇ, e vāḷe tem vaḷo... 1

(1) Everyone listen as I tell you the characteristics of the genuine Sant. After recognizing the Sant, offer your mind and your life and do according to his will.

Jenā antarmā avināsh, vās karī vasiyā;

 Tene kām krodh pāmyā nāsh, lobh ne moh gayā... 2

(2) God resides in the heart of a Sant who has destroyed lust, anger, greed, and infatuation from within.

Evā shatrutaṇu ṭaḷyu sāl, lāl jyā āvī rahyā;

 Teṇe sant thayā chhe nihāl, pūraṇkām thayā... 3

(3) The root of such enemies (vices) are not present in whom God resides. Such a Sant if fulfilled and he has accomplished all that needs to be accomplished.

Evā sant je hoy sansār, shodhīne sevījīe;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand nirdhār, te lābh to lījīe... 4

(4) Nishkulanand Swami says with assurance to find such a Sant in this world, serve him, and definitely take the opportunity of serving him.

Pad - 3

Sāchā sant sevye sevyā Nāth, sevyā sur sahune;

 Sevyo mukta muni rushi sāth, bījā sevyā bahune... 1

(1) By serving a genuine Sant, one has served God and all devtās. He has also served all the muktas, munis, rishis, and countless others.

Evā sant jamye jamyā Shyām, jamyā sahu devtā;

 Jamyā sarve lok sarve dhām, sahu thayā trapatā... 2

(2) When the Sant eats, God eats and all the devtas eat. Moreover, everyone in all of the loks and dhāms have eaten. Everyone becomes satisfied.

Evā santne pūjīne paṭ, prītyeshu paherāviyā;

 Tene ḍhānkyā chhe sahunā ghaṭ, bhalā man bhāviyā... 3

(3) Whoever lovingly worships the Sant by offering him clothes has clothed everyone with their approval.

Evā sant maḷye maḷyā Swāmī, khāmī koye na rahī;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand shīsh nāmī, sāchī sahune kahī... 4

(4) When one attains the Sant, one attains God and no deficiency remains. What Nishkulanand Swami says to everyone while bowing his head is the truth.

Pad - 4

Nakkī vāt chhe e nirdhār, jūṭhī jarāye nathī;

 Sahu antare karo vichār, ghaṇu shu kahu kathī... 1

(1) This is definitely the truth; there is no lie in this. Everyone think about this from within their heart. What more can I say?

Ek jamtā boliyo shankh, asankhyathī shu saryu;

 Ek jamīne bolyo nishank, Yamunā jāvā karyu... 2

(2) The conch shell (of victory) sounded after ‘one’ ate. What was accomplished by feeding many others? But by feeding only one (a genuine devotee of Krishna), the conch shell sounded and Yamuna created a path to go.

Em ek pūjye pūjyā sahu, sevye sahu seviyā;

 Maṭe ghaṇu ghaṇu shu kahu, bhed bhaktanā kahyā... 3

(3) In this way, by worshiping ‘one’ (i.e. the genuine Sant), one has worshiped everyone. And by serving ‘one’, one has served everyone. After distinguishing the genuine Sant from other devotees, how much more can I say?

Have evā vinā je anek, jagatmā je kahīe;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand vivek, sevye sukh shu lahīe... 4

(4) Now, other than the genuine Sant, there are countless others in this world; Nishkulanand Swami asks with discretion, what happiness will one gain by serving them?

The background story is found in the footnote of Swamini Vat 5/313: During the Mahabharat era, Mudgal rishi was a pure, devout rishi who possessed the shilonchh vrutti – the ability to pick up individual grains from the storage area in the farm and eat them. He fasted for six months, without eating anything. When the crops ripened, he would collect grains from the fields and feed any guests. Once, he fed Durvasa. A mongoose rolled in the grains spilt by Durvasa while eating. Since they had been affectionately served by Mudgal rishi, the mongoose turned half golden. Then, many years later, the Pandavs performed a Rajsuya Yagna and fed 21,000 Brahmins. This mongoose rolled in the grains spilt by these Brahmins, but its remaining half did not become golden. So, the mongoose commented, “Your Rajsuya Yagna does not even carry the merit equal to Mudgal rishi’s few grams of food.” Arjun narrated this to Shri Krishna. He said, “A Chāndāl devotee of mine is meditating on me and is offering worship. He has remained hungry.” So, the Pandavs found him and sitting him at a distance, fed him. But still the conch of victory (success) did not sound. Shri Krishna said, “Feed him with the same feelings you feed me.” When this was done, the conch sounded and by rolling in his spilt grains, the other half of the mongoose turned golden.

Pad - 5

Now, Nishkulanand Swami is switching to the characteristics of an asant or a fraudulent sant (one posing to be a great sant but their motive is selfish.)

Jenā antarmā kām krodh, lobhnī lāhya baḷe;

 Evā bahu kartā hoy bodh, te sāmbhaḷye shu vaḷe... 1

(1) There are many in this world who preach, but their heart rages with the flames of lust, anger, and greed. What can we gain from listening to them?

Man matsar mamtā moh, īrshā ati ghaṇī;

 Evo adharma sarg samoh, dhārī rahyā je dhaṇī... 2

(2) They harbor a horde of adharma - ego, jealousy, I-ness and my-ness, delusion, etc. They are the head of these vicious natures.

Tene sevtā shu faḷ thāy, pūjīne shu pāmīe;

 Je jamāḍīe te paṇ jāy, khādhu je harāmīe... 3

(3) What merits can we gain from serving them or worshiping them? Whatever we feed such a one who is unworthy is in vain.

Enā darshan te dukhdeṇ, na thāy to na kījīe;

 Suṇī Nishkuḷānandnā veṇ, sahu manī lījīe... 4

(4) Even their darshan invites misery; therefore, avoid it if possible. Listening to Nishkulanand Swami’s words, believe it to be true.

Pad - 6

Nishkulanand Swami continues to describe a pseudo-sant.

Evā vīkārī jannī vāt, denārī chhe dukhnī;

 Jenā antarmā dinrāt, ichchhā vishay sukhnī... 1

(1) Mere talk of such a one who is malicious brings grief. Such a person harbors desires of enjoying the sensual pleasures (panch-vishays) day and night.

Ene arthe kare upāy, shodhī sārā gāmne;

 Pote potānu mā’tam gāy, chā’ye dām vāmne... 2

(2) He endeavors for the purpose of (fulfilling those desires) by finding a good village. He sings his own glory, while secretly desiring wealth and women.

Kare kathā kīratan kāvya, arath e sarvā;

 Bhalo dekhāḍe bhaktibhāv, par ghar mārvā... 3

(3) He preaches and sings devotional songs for the purpose of fulfilling his desires. He even exhibits devotion only to deceive others into acquiring what he desires by exploiting homes (taking advantage of host’s hospitality).

Ethī kedī na thāy kalyāṇ, jignāsune jāṇvu;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand nīrvāṇ, pekhī paramaṇvu... 4

(4) One who craves liberation should understand that they can never be liberated by such a fraud. Nishkulanand Swami says with certainty, one should make the determination (of a sant vs. asant) by examining closely.

Pad - 7

Nishkulanand Swami continues to describe a pseudo-sadhu.

Deh poshvā sāru je dambh, kare chhe je kubuddhi;

 Khoṭā sukh arthe ārambh, mūke nahi mūā sudhī... 1

(1) One with a malicious intellect fakes (his greatness) only to sustain his body. He is only after false happiness and will never give up his pursuit from the beginning till the end.

Teṇe janam pashune pāḍ, khoyo khoṭā kāraṇe;

 Moksha mārge didhā kamāḍ, kaḍī jaḍī bārṇe... 2

(2) His life is like that of an animal as he has wasted his birth for a false purpose. He has closed the doors of his liberation and locked it with a chain.

Fero na fāvyo thayo fajīt, jīt gaī jaḷmā;

 Melī mukta motapnī rīt, khyāti karī khaḷmā... 3

(3) He was not successful in his life and he lost his reputation and fame. He lost his victory. He abandoned the path of the great muktas; on the contrary, he gained fame among immoral people.

Āp ḍahāpaṇe ākho divas, dukhe bharyo do’ylo;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand avas, khāṭyo maḷ khoylo... 4

(4) In his own (backward) cleverness, he passes his days suffering from depression. Nishkulanand Swami says, he has certainly lost all that he gained (i.e. the attainment of God).

Pad - 8

Sant asantnī oḷkhāṇ, pādī chhe Pūrāṇmā;

 Suṇī sarve jan sujāṇ, taṇāsho ma tāṇmā... 1

(1) The distinction between a Sant and a fraudulent sant has been explained in the Puran. Hearing this distinction, O wise ones, do not be swept by the current of fraudulent sadhus.

Jaḍbharat Janak Jaydev, evu thāvu āpṇe;

 Tyāre kartā asantnī sev, vāt kaho kem baṇe... 2

(2) We should aim to be like Jadbharat, Janak, and Jaydev. However, by serving a pseudo-sadhu, how will we achieve that?

Ati ādaryu kām atol, parlok pāmvā;

 Tyāre kharī karī joīe khoḷ, vighan ne vāmvā... 3

(3) We have embarked on an unparalleled task - to reach parlok (Akshardham). Therefore, we should truly seek the way (i.e. find a true Sant) so we can remove all obstacles.

Vaṇ samje sār asār, pār kaho koṇ thayā;

 Karī Nishkuḷānand vichār, sant asant kahyā... 4

(4) Without understanding what is true and what is false, who has reached that goal (of attaining Akshardham)? Nishkulanand Swami has deeply contemplated and described the qualities of a Sant and an asant.
