Chosath Padi

Pad 9 - 16

Pad - 9

Nishkulanand Swami described the characteristics of a false sant. In this verse, Nishkulanand Swami mainly points out that a false sadhu has malicious intents, such as fulfilling his own desires and indulgences. Such a false sadhu tries to hide his maligned intents; however, when residing with such a person and observing their behaviour, their true motives become clear. No matter how much a false sadhu conceals his true motives, they will be exposed because desires that reside in his heart naturally determine his behavior.

Sāchā santnā ang endhāṇ re, joī levā jīvaḍīe;

 Jene maḷve manyu kalyāṇ re, tene jovā ghaḍīghaḍīe... 1

(1) One should examine the characteristics of a true Sant. One should look frequently upon that Sant, who will grant moksha upon attaining him. (Since Nishkulanand Swami is starting to describe a false sadhu, the meaning of these lines should be understood as: Understand the characteristics of a true Sant and check to see if they exist in the person before accepting him as a great Sant.)

Khātā pītā jotā jaṇāshe re, āshay enā antarno;

 Ūṭhe bese bole kaḷāshe re, pāse vastā e narno... 2

(2) By observing him eat and drink, get up and sit, by staying close to him, one will recognize his true intentions.

Hashe hārad haiyā keru re, vaṇ kahye paṇ vartāshe;

 Jem jem chhapāḍshe ghaṇerū re, tem tem chhatu thāshe... 3

(3) Even if he does not speak, one will know what is in his heart by his conduct or behavior. As much as he attempts to conceal his true nature, his true nature will be exposed.

Khāy khuṇe lasaṇ lakīre, te gandh kare chhupāvānu;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand vāt nakī re, jem chhe tem jaṇāvānu... 4

(4) One who secretly eats onions, even a small amount, has to hide the smell. Nishkulanand Swami says the truth will certainly be exposed as it is.

Pad - 10

Nishkulanand Swami continues to describe the characteristics of false sadhus.

Jevo ras bharyo je ṭhāme re, ṭevo temāthī jharshe;

 Koī kāḍhshe paḍye kāme re, nische ṭevo nīsarshe... 1

(1) Whatever is filled in a vessel, that is what will flow out of it. When needed, that is certainly what will come out. (Whichever characteristics, intention, and desires one harbors, those will come out naturally.)

Jone āhār kare jan jevo re, ṭevo āve oḍkāre;

 Aṇpuchhe nīsre evo re, āshay antarno bā’re... 2

(2) The smell of one’s belch will reveal the food one has consumed. Similarly, even without asking, the intention of one’s heart is reflected in the way he acts.

Jone chīl chaḍe asmāne re, najar tenī nīchī chhe;

 Dekhī māraṇne man māne re, anya jovā ānkh mīchī chhe... 3

(3) A vulture (a scavenger bird) flies high in the sky; yet, its gaze is below - on the earth. It only looks for a kill to scavenge and its eyes are closed for everything else.

Evā lakshaṇvāḷā lākhu re, dīṭhā me drage bhariyā;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand shu bhākhu re, oḷkho enī joī kriyā... 4

(4) I have seen with my eyes hundreds of thousands with these treacherous characteristics. What more can Nishkulanand Swami say? Recognize (these false sadhus) by observing their behavior.

Pad - 11

Nishkulanand Swami continues to describe the characteristics of false sadhus.

Kāmī bole kāme bhariyu re, lobhī bole lobh laī;

 Krodhī bole krodhe anusariyu re, mānī bole mān saī... 1

(1) One who is licentious speaks with lustful thoughts. One who is greedy speaks of wealth. One who is liable to anger speaks angrily. One who is arrogant speaks arrogantly.

Svādī bole svād vakhāṇī re, dambhī bole dambh bharī;

 Ahamkārī ahamkār āṇī re, kapṭī bole kapaṭ karī... 2

(2) One who craves tastes will praise the tastes. One who is hypocritical will speak with pretentiousness. One who is egoistic will speak boastfully. One who is deceptive will speak deceptively.

Māte je janne maḷe jevā re, ṭevo tene rang chaḍshe;

 Nahī jāy shrotā sāru levā re, jem chhe tem tenu jaḍshe... 3

(3) Whoever one meets with these characteristics will also acquire those characteristics of that person. The fraudulent sant will not need to look for followers; they will naturally find followers that are like-minded.

Khub kharā hoy khapvāḷā re, tene jovu tapāsī;

 Thāy Nishkuḷānand sukhāḷā re, kharī vāt kahu khāsī... 4

(4) Those who have a deep desire for their moksha should really examine these characteristics. Nishkulanand Swami says he is telling you the truth.

Pad - 12

Nishkulanand Swami describes what happens when one really understands the characteristics of a true Sadhu.

Vaṇ sādhuno vartāro re, ā pad suṇtā oḷkhāshe;

 Pachhī shodhī samāgam sāro re, te sāthe prīti thāshe... 1

(1) One will recognize the behavior of a false sadhu listening to these verses. Then, one will be inspired to find a true Sadhu and will develop love for him.

Teh vinā man nahi māne re, bīje dalḍu nahi bese;

 Kāyarnī vāto kāne re, sāmbhaḷī panḍyamā nahi pese... 2

(2) Then, one will not develop love for others (false sadhus) and their heart will not settle for them. One will not be affected by talks of cowards.

Ānkh antarnī ūghaḍshe re, paḍshe pārkhu potāne;

 Kharā khoṭānī gam paḍshe re, jaḍshe vāto e jotāne... 3

(3) The internal eye will open, allowing them to distinguish a true and a false sant. One will be able to determine the true Sadhu among the false sadhus. Upon observation, one will come to understand this discourse.

Pachhī sant asant ek pāḍe re, nahi dekhe te koī dane;

 Kahī Nishkuḷānand shu dekhāḍe re, jāṇshe jem chhe tem mane... 4

(4) Then, one will not consider a true Sant the same as a false sant. By saying this, Nishkulanand Swami shows the difference and one will understand as it is in their mind.

Pad - 13

Nishkulanand Swami now describes the characteristics of a true Sant.

Jenu tan man manyu tyāge re, bhakti dharma bhāve chhe;

 Tenā vachan vīntyā vairāgye re, antarmāthī āve chhe... 1

(1) One who believes in renunciation of things related to the body and the mind, one who favors bhakti and dharma (is a true Sant). His words are entwined with vairāgya and come from his heart.

Shīl santosh ne vaḷī shānti re, emā rahīne bole chhe;

 Dhīrajtā kahī nathī jātī re, gnān dhyānmā ḍole chhe... 2

(2) He speaks with discipline, with contentment, and peacefully. He never loses his patience (forbearance). He sways with gnān (of his true form) and dhyān (of God).

Evā sant sahunā sagā re, par upkārī pūrā chhe;

 Jenā dalmā nahi koī dagā re, satya vātmā shurā chhe... 3

(3) Such a Sant is related to all. He is benevolent to everyone. In his heart, he has no thoughts of deceiving anyone. He is brave in speaking the truth.

Vaḷī het ghaṇu chhe haiye re, ānkhe amrut varse chhe;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand shu kahiye re, e jan joī Hari harkhe chhe... 4

(4) Moreover, he has immense love in his heart. Amrut flows from his eyes. Nishkulanand says, “What more can I say? Even God is pleased seeing such a Sant.”

Pad - 14

Nishkulanand Swami continues to describe the characteristics of a true Sadhu.

Kene dukh devāno dalmā re, bhulye bhunḍo bhāv nathī;

 Par upkāre paḷpaḷmā re, ūpje īchchhā antarthī... 1

(1) In his heart, he has no malicious intentions of hurting anyone, even by mistake. Only thoughts that come from his heart every second are of helping others.

Panchvishayne parharī re, varte chhe vaṇ vikāre;

 Teh jaṇāy jove karīne re, jan e bole chhe jyāre... 2

(2) He remains free of desires, while having abandoned the panch-vishays (indulgences of the five senses). His true character can be discerned from the manner of his speech.

Vaṇ vichāre paṇ vātu re, āve enā antarthī;

 Bole aham mamtānu ghasātu re, ūtaryu man tansukh parthī... 3

(3) Without much thought, words (of renunciation) naturally come from his heart. (His words are not arranged or premeditated. He speaks as he behaves.) He speaks ill of ‘I-ness’ and ‘my-ness’. He has an apathy toward the happiness related to the mind and body.

Evā kyāthī maḷe jan eke re, nīrmaḷ antar nishkāmī;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand viveke re, bījā bahu hoy harāmī... 4

(4) Where can one find even one who is pure in his heart and free of desires? Nishkulanand Swami says with discretion, others are unworthy and wicked in comparison.

Pad - 15

Vishayī jannā vāyak re, bharyā bharpūr bhunḍāye;

 Hoye sahune dukhdāyak re, ethī sukhiyā shu thāye... 1

(1) The words of one who is after sensual pleasures are full of impurity. They are the cause of misery to others. How can one become happy by listening to them?

Jone Āgnīdhra Dīrghatamā re, vishay sāru valakhyā chhe;

 Enā vachan shodhī shāstramā re, sarve laīne lakhyā chhe... 2

(2) Look at Āgnidhra Rishi and Dirghatamā Rishi, both who made vain efforts for sensual pleasures. Their words were found in the scriptures and were written accordingly.

Vaḷī Vashishṭh ne Dūrvāsā re, lobhī krodhī kahāve chhe;

 Enā antarnī je āsā re, sarve shāstra jaṇāve chhe... 3

(3) Moreover, Vashisht Rishi and Durvasa Rishi are known as greedy and angry. All the scriptures have made known the intentions of their heart.

Maṭe je janmā guṇ jevo re, evo āpe sevakne;

 Kahe Nishkuḷānand na sevo re, jāṇī evo vivekne... 4

(4) Therefore, whichever virtues are in one, they pass it on to their sevaks. Nishkulanand Swami cautions not to serve (one with these faults) using the discretion of the genuine and the fake.

Pad - 16

Kahyā khaṭ dash pad ā khoḷī re, sahu janne samjāvāne;

 Kahyu tan manmā me toḷī re, jem chhe tem jaṇāvāne... 1

(1) I have written these 16 verses to explain to others (the distinction between a Sant and an asant). I have weighed my words (thoughtfully considered what I should say) to explain it as it is to others.

Koī pīyūsh rasne pāī re, uchhere nar uragne;

 Toy nirvikh te na thāy re, vādhe vikh enā angne... 2

(2) Even if one raises a snake by feeding it amrut, the snake will not become free of poison. On the contrary, it will become even more poisonous.

Jone jevo guṇ je bīje re, ṭevo teh jaṇāve chhe;

 Tenī koṭi jatan jo kīje re, toy te shu badlāve chhe... 3

(3) Whatever seed is planted, that is the type of plant that will grow. (Whatever characteristics one possesses, those are the characteristics that person will exhibit.) There is no way to change what will grow with the care provided to the plant. (Those who are poisonous - or malicious - will not abandon their vices.)

Evā jherīlā jan jāṇī re, tarat tene tajī devā;

 Suṇī Nishkuḷānandnī vāṇī re, shuddh santnī kariye sevā... 4

(4) One should abandon the company of such who are poisonous. Listen to Nishkulanand Swami and serve the genuine and pure Sant.
